Landscape is probably two-dimensional art’s most accessible form. But when painted scenes of photorealism or Monet-derived Impressionism are pushed into the realm of abstraction — far from the genre’s root form that requires meticulous observation and recording — what was once “just” a depiction turns into a visual poem about nature.
52 Weeks | 52 Trees - Small Studies by Dale McEntire
The Gallery at Flat Rock
Artist Dale McEntire’s show, titled 52 Weeks | 52 Trees, takes its form from his practice of painting one tree per week throughout 2019—for Dale the practice was born from an appreciation for the multiplicity of trees growing here in Appalachia (all on his Saluda property!) woven with a challenge to paint each tree in the style of an artist that inspires him.

Artist Profile
A movement of painters and sculptors identified as “Nature Symbolist” has inspired me to create work that is about the essential quality of nature. For me this is a spiritual essence that is underneath the obvious form and can be sensed with time and awareness.
